Layout Description

Set in the year 1929, prior to the Great Depression, this model railroad represents the Southern Railway mainline running through Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the line to Asheville, extending as far as Hendersonville, North Carolina. At this time, diesel locomotives had not yet been introduced; all the locomotives in this layout are steam-powered. Passenger trains were still prevalent, including luxurious services like the Crescent Limited.

The Saluda Grade, which climbs steeply at nearly 5%, is the steepest grade on a Class One railroad and is featured in this layout to reach the second level. Staging yards illustrate the "off-stage" cities of Atlanta, Georgia; Washington, D.C.; Columbia, South Carolina; and Asheville, North Carolina. The lower level's benchwork and trackage are currently complete, while work on the second level is ongoing, nearing Tuxedo, North Carolina
